Yesterday's 8 mile hike was incredible. What a memory! The wind was energetic and gave enormous energy. We had figured it was about 60 mph, but after reading this article it might have been more. We literally felt like we were flying in some parts of our hike. After the hike we cooked organic food in the parking lot and drank shots of fire cider (non-alcoholic drink that is made with apple cider vinegar, horseradish, garlic, cayenne, onions, ginger and ginseng). At 6:00 pm we were all standing in the parking lot watching the trees stand against the wind or should I say sway as we drank High Vitamin C Tea. Capelook Out was the last hike in our Winter Series Hikes and it was a memorable for all that came. Next up the Spring Hikes

Mountain Mama Wellness Box-Tenth Week

Wild Food Of The Week:  Queen Anne's Lace

Once you know how to safely identify queen anne’s lace, it’s a pretty versatile plant in recipes.  In the spring and fall, the roots may be dug up and eaten in the same manner as domestic carrots.  While these are quite flavorful, don’t expect them to be as big or tender as their orange commercial cousins.

If you enjoy the flavor of the leaves, they can be used either fresh or dried as you would parsley. Young flower buds may be added to stir-fries and skillet dishes.  Or the tiny flowers can be scattered upon finished dishes or in salads.  

You can also eat queen anne’s lace fruit (the tiny green or red bits that eventually dry into seeds).  Harvest the fruit of queen anne’s lace after the flowers start to curl into birds nests, but before they go completely brown.  Queen anne’s lace fruit has a strong flavor that is like an explosion of parsley with a long finish of citrus.

Side Note: Queen anne’s lace  is not a good plant for beginning foragers to try simply because of the risk of mistaking it with poison hemlock.  Never eat a plant which you cannot properly identify.  No harm ever comes from walking away; just consider it a learning experience.

Sage Pesto

Recipe from Rosemary Gladstar's book:  Medicinal Herbs, a beginners guide 

1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves and stems

1/2 cup Queen Annes lace leaf fruit mix OR  parsley

1/4 to 1/2 cup fresh sage leaves, first time making it try the 1/4 cup version and if you would like it stronger than next time add more

3 cloves garlic

3/4 to 1 cup olive oil

1/4 to 1/2 cup sunflower seeds or walnuts or a mix

1/4 cup raw cheese (optional) 

Freshly ground black pepper and sea salt 

To make: 

Combine the herbs, garlic and olive oil in a blender or food processor and pulse until creamy.  Mix in the nuts or seeds and cheese (if using) and salt and pepper to taste.  

To use: 

Serve on toast or crackers, pasta, steamed grains, omelets, vegetables or organic meat.

Mushroom Lover's Special Treat:

Quinoa, Mushroom, and Sage Pilaf with Shiitake Crisps

The shiitake crisps are addictive, so you might want to make much more than theis recipe calls for 

For the shiitake crisps: 

1/2 lb shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and cut into 1/4 inch slices

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Sea salt and pepper

For the pilaf:

1 oz dried porcini mushrooms

3 tabls extra-virgin olive oil

2 large shallots, minced

3 garlic cloves, minced 

1/2 red bell pepper, cut into small dice

1/lb mixed mushrooms, such as white, chanterelle, shiitake, or cremini, coarsely chopped 

2 cups quinoa, rinsed

3 Tbls minced, fresh sage leaves 

3 cups organic vegetable broth or water

1/4 cup organic red wine

sea salt and  freshly ground black pepper

2 Tbls chopped fresh, flat-leaf parsley, for garnish ( you could use Queen Annes Lace leafs)

2 Tbls chopped chives, for garnish

Preheat oven to 375 

To prepare the shiitake crisps, toss together mushroom slices, olive oil, sea salt and pepper in a medium bowl.  Spread mushrooms in a single layer on a baking sheet.  Roast in the preheated oven until crispy, about 20 to 30 minutes.  They will look much smaller and dried out.  

Set aside. 

For the pilaf, soak dried porcini mushrooms in hot water for 30 minutes.  Drain, reserving soaking water.  Chop mushrooms. 

In a large saucepan, sweat the shallots, garlic, and red pepper until softened.  Add mushrooms, including chopped porcini, and cook until their moisture has evaporated and they start to brown.  

Add quinoa and sage.  

Stir well to coat the quinoa with oil.  Add in broth, 3/4 cup of the porcini soaking liquid, and wine.  

season well with salt and pepper.  Bring the liquid to a boil;  Lower heat to simmering.  Cover pot tightly and cook for 15 minutes.  Turn off heat and let sit for 10 minutes.  Fluff quinoa with a fork.  

Put in a serving dish, sprinkle with parsley (or queen annes lace) and chives.  

Top with shiitake crisps.  

Makes 6 to 8 servings. 

Antioxidant Superstars

Rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano are about the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet thanks to their aromatic phenols.  Though these four have slightly different medicinal properties, they're all anti-inflammatory, circulation-enhancing, and immune supportive.  

Try these interesting beverage combinations.

Fresh herbs often have superior flavor, but the health benefits get stronger as they dry. 

Remember when you make a tea or herbal beverage, that if you are using dried herbs, you always use less than if you you fresh herbs. 

 

Lemon Balm:  Did you know that by adding a few leaves of lemon balm to salad increases the salad's antioxidant activity 150 - 200 percent?  They work as a team to refresh one another, enhance absorption, and boost activity. 

Tea Of The Week

Place bag of herbs in a gallon jug, with warm filtered water or spring water.  Stir in 4 to 6 tablespoons  of honey.  

Let sit in the sun for 8 hours

Strain and enjoy

Tea Mix Recipe

14 cups of  warm spring water or filtered water

8 heaping Tbls. lavender 

8 heaping Tbls chamomile

8 heaping Tbls rose petals

1 heaping handful of fresh lemon balm

If do not have fresh lemon balm add 1/4 cup dried lemon balm and a few lemon wedges. 

4- 6 Tbls. local raw honey

Put all ingredients in a gallon glass jar.  Stir until honey is dissolved.  

Sun infusion let sit in the sun for 8  hours

Lunar infusion let sit throughout the night

Strain and enjoy

Rosemary For Headaches and Migraines

Today I had a bad migraine. I made a cup of tea and decided it was best to go outside and get some fresh air. The greenhouse has a relaxing atmosphere. I sat on our cob bench and zoned out. My migraine was not letting up. I wanted to curl up and lay on the bench. I closed my eyes and took deep breaths and then opened them. The little voice said Rosemary. I was sitting there looking at my three big Rosemary plants. It was a light bulb moment. I took a few snips of the plant and started taking deep breaths of Rosemary's heavenly scent. I think it took less than five mintues to get rid of my migraine. Yeah!! I tucked the Rosemary in my pocket and finished doing my greenhouse chores. Next time you get a headache or a migraine and you have a Rosemary bush, you might want to try this.

This is my families discussion on what Shire City Herbals(Brian, Dana and Amy) have done ( click on link below). So far they are showing no respect, and their hearts hold on to corporate greed. I can only hope their hearts purge the greediness that they carry. No I will not feel bad if we as a community close down their business. However, if they realize what they did, which is something very bad, apologize and drop the trademark, then I will wish them success. I will be making a video daily about this subject until it is dropped. There is a reason I did not die 4 weeks ago, it was not my time. I still had unfinished business, otherwise I would not be here. I a am female warrior who will fight for freedom. Those who threaten the old heritage of herbalism and try to make it a corporate item, I will not let happen. My heart carries the old ways of healing and I will do everything I can to protect this.

I have had enough of the corporate greed that goes on in America.  I have had enough with Monsanto and all these food companies trying to take control of everything.  For me this is the last straw.  Herbalism and healing foods have been a part of my life.  My battle is to protect herbs and plants.   I am now in a fight, and in this fight I need to have a strategy, a back door ( ninja warrior skills),  the patience of a cougar, the mind of an elephant and the trickiness of a coyote.  This battle requires patience.  

This is not a physical threat. My statement reflects that I will doing everything I can, push boycotts, flood the internet, send them letters that are peaceful etc.  

Isn't it time to stop the greed that is going on in America?

Mountain Mama Wellness Box-Eighth Week

 Weekly Wellness Box :

This weeks goodies:  ZUCCHINI (lots) collard greens, nettle, brassica stir fry mix,  sage, rosemary, tea mix of lemon balm peppermint, pineapple sage and a honey suckle flower, lettuce/flower mix, kale,  a mix of wild spinach, orch spinach arugula, swiss chard and a few mustard greens, fennel fronds,  a mix of garlic and onion chives, cucumbers, basil and a few green beans

If you do not have a membership with a CSA, it is time to hit the farmers markets.  They are all over the place with loads of incredible fresh food.  Make sure you are supporting local organic farmers or no spray farmers.  This is vitally important for your health, your family's and the earth.  

Here is a list of foods you should be (or at least try) adding to your life.  

Arugula, spinach, salads, kale, cucumbers, zucchini, basil, swiss chard, fennel fronds, sage, rosemary, lemon balm, peppermints, chives, celery, tomatoes (for some areas) collard greens, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, all sorts of brassica leaves, carrots, beets, green beans,onions, new potatoes, strawberries (organic only), blueberries (organic only) flower salads, mustard greens (almost at the end of the season, coming back for fall) and the wild foods, curly dock, yellow dock, cat's ear flowers, lambs quarters, sorrel, honeysuckle, raspberry leaves (for tea).  

As you can see this is a great list of many healthy foods that you can add throughout the day.

A great way to start on your path to longevity and being robust: 

Cut out ALL fast food (yes ALL)

Cut out ALL  Soda (yes ALL )

Cut out All artificial colors, artificial flavors, natural flavors

Cut out boxed food

Cut out crap meat, example hot dogs, deli meat, injected chicken breasts, canned meats, etc.  

Say NO to the junk food.   Bake things at home.  

(When I say bake, that does not mean open box of Betty Crocker!   Betty Crocker is not a food, it is an item that feeds cancer cells)

Shop your farmers markets, buy local organic food, local no spray food, and make sure the meat you purchase is grass fed/pasture fed and/or organic feed only 

Get rid of the word diet in your life, it as a negative connotation.  It is time to think about wellness, longevity, being robust and vigorous!  It is time to eat, eat, eat, but, eat the right foods.  

Make yourself healthly, your family and the earth  buy Piling those plates with massive green leafy veggies!

Let sit in the sun for 8 hours

Strain

Sweeten with honey (optional)

Rosemary is one of my most favorite herbs! Here is a recipe for apple rosemary coffee cake.  I actually made them as muffins instead and they were intoxicating! 

I used used honey instead of sugar.  I used about 1/4 cup of honey.

I never use baking powder so I just used 1 tsp. baking soda.  If you use baking powder make sure you are using one that is aluminum free! 

I used organic spelt flour.

1 Cup honey

1 Cup Water

1 Cup fresh basil coarse chopped

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Stir ingredients together in a small saucepan over medium-high heat until honey is dissolved, but don’t boil
  2. Remove from heat, pour through a wire-mesh strainer into an airtight jar or container, discarding leaves
  3. Let cool completely before using
  4. Store in a covered jar in refrigerator up to 2 weeks

Fruit Salad With Basil and Lime

1 lb ORGANIC strawberries
1 medium cantaloupe
7 - 10 basil leaves
1 lime
 
Wash and cut strawberries into fourths.
Cut cantaloupe in half. Scoop out seeds. Using a melon baller, scoop out flesh of cantaloupe into melon balls.
Roll up basil leaves and cut into thin strips.
Combine strawberries, melon balls, and basil in a bowl. Squeeze lime juice all over fruit. Toss and
enjoy.
Basil, Onion and Garlic Chive Infused Olive Oil
1 glass bottle or mason jar (4 cup size)
1/2 cup chopped chives
1 tsp peppercorns
1 cup basil
3 cups olive oil ( or a little less) 
Chop the chives, tear the basil, bruising the leaves to release the essential oils. Stuff the basil, chives and peppercorns into the bottle or mason jar.

Pour the olive oil into a heat-proof pot or dish and place over a low flame — I used a large, glass, Pyrex measuring cup. Heat the oil until warm, DO NOT BUBBLE OR BOIL.

You’ll know it’s getting close when the oil’s texture appears to “thin”… you’ll sort of see “swirls” in the oil as this happens. DO NOT let it boil!

Warm you mason jar up, make sure there is no water in it and it is completely dry.  

Once the olive oil is heated, pour the oil over the herbs and cover.

Let stand in a dark place for a week or two, 

Strain

Refrigerate and enjoy!

ZUCCHINI LASAGNA:  
This recipe is a little different, it has no pasta.  So, if you are in the mood for lasagna and you do not have any lasagna noodles here is a great recipe to try.  
You could also add the lasagna noodles to this recipe.
  • 1 lb organic beef
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 1/2 tsp organic oregano
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • sea salt and pepper
  • 28 oz can organic crushed tomatoes
  • 1 organic red pepper sliced thin
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil
  • 3 medium zucchini, sliced 1/8" thick
  • 15 oz organic ricotta
  • 16 oz  organic mozzarella cheese, shredded 
  • 1/4 cup raw cheddar

In a medium sauce pan, brown meat and season with salt. When cooked drain in colander to remove any fat. Add olive oil to the pan and saute garlic and onions about 2 minutes. Return the meat to the pan,  add red pepper, tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt and pepper. Simmer on low for at least 30 minutes. 

Meanwhile, slice zucchini into 1/8" thick slices, add lightly salt and set aside or 10 minutes. Zucchini has a lot of water when cooked, salting it takes out a lot of moisture. After 10 minutes, blot excess moisture with a paper towel.

In a 9x12 casserole spread some sauce on the bottom and starting layering your goodies.  

Bake 45 minutes covered at 375°, then uncovered 15 minutes. Let stand about 5 - 10 minutes before serving.

Side Note:   Try a little drizzle  of your basil syrup on your piece of lasagna,  Yum!

Herbal Hair Infusions

Herbal Hair Infusion,  is used as a hair conditioner.  This method is perfect if you are trying to go all-natural, free of toxic chemicals, free of synthetics and your impact will be light on the environment. This method costs a fraction of the normal hair care routine, even using the cheap stuff. It also cuts down on garbage and pollution because you aren't buying, all those conditioner bottles. Your hair, our wallet, and the planet will thank you.

Rosemary Rinse:  

3 Heaping Tablespoon of Fresh or dried Rosemary (If you like it stronger, feel free to add more.)

1 Pyrex pan or stainless steel pot 

Approximately 4 cups of water in

A fine Mesh Strainer or a Strainer covered with Cheesecloth

Glass bowl or 4 quart mason jar

Plastic flip top container 

Directions:  

1. Bring water to boil, add Rosemary, turn off and cover with a lid, let sit over night  or simmer for 20 minutes, (Leaving it sit over night allows it to become stronger).

2.  In the morning strain the mixture into a large glass mason jar or bowl.  

3.  Store in plastic flip top container.

Pour the rosemary infusion into your hair. Work or comb it in. Don't rinse! You want to leave this in. Simply wring out your hair a little and then dry and style as usual. The lovely scent will stay with you most of the day.

Hair Rinse Recipes: 

Golden Highlights:

2 parts calendar flower

1 part chamomile flower

1 part comfrey leaf

Dark Highlights: 

2 parts garden sage leaf

1 part black walnut hull, chopped 

1 part comfrey leaf

Dry Hair Formula:

1 part calendula flower

1 part marsh mallow root

1 part nettle leaf

Oily Hair Formula; 

1 part rosemary leaf

1 part witch hazel bark (not extract)

1 par yarrow leaf and flower 

Bring the water to a boil.  Add the herbs, cover, turn off let sit overnight or a faster method let simmer over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes.  

Strain

Store in a plastic container with a flip top lid in the shower  or bath. 

After shampooing and rinsing, slowly pour the cooled mixture through the hair and massage into the scalp.  Do not rinse out.

Where does the time fly?  We are on our 15th week and the Wellness Boxes end Oct 12th.  It just seem like yesterday that we just started our first delivery.

Celery seeds are most commonly used as a diuretic, helping to clear toxins from our body system. Provides Calcium

Celery seeds are considered to be a rich source of the mineral calcium. Calcium is necessary for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. It is particularly important for children to receive sufficient calcium, as their bones are developing rapidly. Calcium is also required for proper muscle contractions. Inadequate intake of calcium in earlier years can lead to osteoporosis in later life.

Prevents Gout And Arthritis

Celery seed may be effective at reducing the pain associated with osteoarthritis and gout. In a 12-week study, 15 participants ingested celery seed extract twice daily. The participants had been inflicted with either osteoarthritis or gout for at least 10 years. All of them had restricted mobility that prevented many normal activities. After three weeks, the average participant reported a 68-percent reduction in pain based on a pain threshold scale. After six weeks, some participants reported almost complete pain relief. No side effects were reported by any of the subjects.

Celery seed has produced similar pain-relief benefits on patients with fibromayalgia as well. The pain-relieving properties of celery seed  are due to the presence of 3-n-butylphthalide, or 3nB. 3nB is the compound found in celery that gives it a unique smell and taste.

GentlePumpkin Facial Mask

Tired of being wired and tired? 

Following sugar through the body.....

When a child/adult wakes up in the morning after sleeping for ten or more hours, their blood sugar is naturally low.  Even if they had protein-rich snack before they went to bed the night before, digestion has long since delivered it to the bloodstream and into the cells, and now their blood sugar has dropped down to the bottom range of normal.

One of he most common breakfast meals is favorite breakfast cereal, toast and orange juice.  Side note: Even though the cereal boasts of fortification with vitamins and minerals, the cereal contains over fifteen grams (about five teaspoons) of sugar PER SERVING.

The toast is usually covered with jam or cinnamon and sugar, which contains more sugar and other sweeteners than actual fruit.  Another five teaspoons of sugar.  Even though the orange juice does not contain added sugars, it is still pure carbohydrate, which rapidly digest down into simple sugar.  Within minutes, the entire "power breakfast" surges into the bloodstream in the form of glucose, unimpeded by slower-digesting protein or fat.  

This load of blood sugar is dangerous for the brain.  Although the brain is fueled by sugar, it can't handle excessive sugars, so the pancreas leaps to the rescue, dumping Insulin in to the bloodstream to remove excess sugars before they can "burn" the brain.  At each meal, the pancreas senses how much insulin is needed, even before digestion and absorption are complete, so an insulin reaction can happen very quickly.  Large amounts of insulin are released.  

Then just as rapidly, sugar is pulled out of the bloodstream and deposited in the liver.  When the liver is full, the excess sugar is stored as fat, contributing to the super rising epidemic of obesity in this country! 

Side note:  Even the child/adults who are thin these days are carrying to much fat.  This is also a new epidemic.

Due to the high sugar content of the breakfast the insulin response was exaggerated, so the blood sugar plummets.  It is as though someone pulled an electrical cord out of a socket, he or she will run out of steam.   Their sugar is too low and the brain starts to panic.  They get cranky, headachy, irritable, can't concentrate.   Sometimes a child will fall into a chair and star listlessly at their TV, computer or video games.  At other times their adrenal gland spits cortisol into the bloodstream in a desperate attempt to raise blood sugar.  This extra cortisol makes someone hyperactive and damages the hippocampus, their memory center.  Their energy is "false"...

At this point, child/adult reach for the frig, pantry or freezer, pulling out all the sugary foods they can get thier hands on and stuff them into their mouth, just to get their sugar up.   This will only work briefly, but insulin again kicks in and drops the sugar.

This cycle continues, all day long, daily weekly, monthly yearly unless their lifestyle eating habits change.  

I hope by reading this I have given you some motivation to stay away from sugar.  Fall is here soon and for most it starts the "Sugar Fest Of Eating" until after spring.   Challenge yourself to stay away from all the sugar holiday items this fall, winter and spring.

Getting Rid Of The Tired Bug Or The Up Down Bug

1.  Get rid of foods with added sugar, corn syrup and agave

2.  Limit fruit.  

        a.    Eat fruit for a dessert at night.  

         b.   Eat a protein with the fruit.   

         c.    Choose fruits that have less fructose in them, chart below

     a.  Adults at least 1 hour 5 days a week, this is the minimum amount 

     b. Tired after work, tough go for a walk/run/kung fu/lift weights/dance etc...

              1.  Get an exercise partner

               3.  Get private classes, this will keep on on task 

     c.  Children, tweens, teens.  At least an hour EVERYDAY.

                1.  Young children need to physically play off and on ALL DAY

                 2.  It is up to you as a parent to get your child physically moving, because                             there is not enough physical activity in school. 

                   

4.  Limit Screen Time video games, movies, facebook, TV, social net works:

       a.   2-4 hours a week 

        b.  By limiting their screen time ( and yours) you will gain more energy 

5.  Get plenty of Protein- Organic When You Can

         a.  Eggs, nuts, seeds, cheese, meats 

          b.  Beans combined with rice, pasta or potatoes makes a complete protein

          c.  Organic protein bars

          d.  Organic protein drinks 

6.  Sleep

           a.  Lack of sleep increases health problems, add this to bad eating habits and                     you have doubled your chances of getting diabetes, heart disease etc.

7.  Avoid these foods:  read labels

Soy, corn, canola,  non-organic wheat, artificial colors, artificial flavors, msg, corn syrup, sugar, agave, hydrogenated oil, frozen meals, campbells, most restaurants, pilsbury products, hot dogs (unless they are organic) any coffee drink with added sweeteners and artificial sweeteners! ,  no soda,  no caffeinated drinks for kids, tweens and teens!! and any food that has words you do not know what they are.

Rosemary Hair Care: 

Before name brand shampoos, women turned to their gardens, woods and fields for plants that met all of their beauty needs. Rosemary Hair Care: 

Rosemary Infusion-It's a simple as a cup of tea. Actually, it is like a cup to tea! simply boil water and add your rosemary to the water. Allow it to steep for 15-30 mins and then sift away the leaves. You are left with rosemary infused water. The water can then be used for a rinse for any of the following; cleansing rinse, treatment for shine, treatment for graying, treatment for dandruff and scalp irritation. DO NOT RINSE OUT! 
 
Rosemary Oil- There are two ways that you can achieve an oil infused with rosemary. The first which is the quickest but not necessarily the cheapest is purchasing rosemary essential oil (which is a highly concentrated) and adding a few drops to your oil which you use daily. The second option is buy fresh rosemary and crush it within your hands to bring out the aroma. Put the crushed herb into a GLASS bottle (beer bottle, jelly, jars etc) and pour your choice of oil (olive, jojoba etc) over top the herbs. Try to pick a herb that is not tempature sensitive like coconut oil. Put the bottle in a cool, dark space and allow it to sit for 2-4 weeks. You can then apply this rosemary infused oil to your hair and scalp for the following;dandruff, scalp irritation, stimulate hair growth, scalp massage, added shine and luster.
 
Rosemary Vinegar- Crush fresh rosemary and add to a jar of organic apple cider vinegar.  Follow the same steps as the oil and store in a cool, dark space for 2-4 weeks. After shampooing hair, combine 1/4 cup of your rosemary vinegar to 1-2 cup of water and rinse hair with it. DO NOT RINSE OUT. This is best used for the following; gentle cleanser, hair treatment for Ph balance, shine and conditioning.

Scapes-Curly Garlic Tops

Scape Pesto Recipe
1 cup (or less) freshly grated Parmesan cheese or other sharp Italian cheese
1–2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice, adjusted to taste
1/4 pound roughly chopped scapes 
1/2 cup olive oil
salt to taste

Puree scapes, olive oil, and juice in a blender or food processor until nearly smooth. (You can make a smooth paste if you prefer, but most people like a little texture in the pesto.) Gently stir in the cheese or gingerly pulse the cheese into the mixture; take it easy as you mix in the cheese to avoid making the pesto gummy by over blending. Taste and then adjust juice and salt to taste.

Store in the refrigerator to use within two or three days; freeze for longer storage. Scape pesto freezes well, and it holds its appealing green color when frozen even better than the traditional basil pesto.

Garlic Scape Hummus

2 cans of chick peas (garbanzos), drained
1 cup sesame seeds or tahini
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup fresh chopped garlic scapes

Place the ingredients in a blender and mix on high until a thick paste forms. Salt to taste.

Variation: Add your favorite curry, to taste.

Introduction

Sheep sorrel is widely regarded as a noxious weed with 45 of the fifty states reporting it as an intruder, but the small, creeping plant has a long-standing reputation as a medicinal herb. Sheep sorrel does have some culinary value as a garnish and a tart flavoring agent in salads and soups, and is one of the main ingredients in Chinese hot and sour soup. It is one of the main ingredients in Essiac blend.

Summary

Sorrel does make a wonderfully cooling beverage and soup, and its tart flavor is a perfect foil for hot and spicy herbs and seeds.

Precautions

Because sheep sorrel contains oxalic acid, it is recommended that it not be used in large amounts for extended periods of time as it can cause mineral deficiencies and liver damage. People with rheumatism, arthritis, gout or kidney stones should avoid sorrel as it can worsen their conditions.
